Hill Walking in Graiguenamanagh
Graiguenamanagh is perfectly located to be one of the best base camps for walkers in Ireland. The range of walks available in the area ensures that there are excellent rambles for people of all abilities. This is reflected in its recent inclusion in Lonely Planets walking guide to Ireland.
But maybe today you just want a gentler stroll. Then enjoy a pleasant walk on the river towpath, maybe to the next lock gate, or maybe stretch your legs and mosey on down to St. Mullins(5 miles). Here the tide rises and falls in a steep river valley with high sides, cloaked in a mix of deciduous and conifer forest.
Entry level walks include the river Towpath along the Barrow which can be a simple stroll to St. Mullins downstream, a comfortable one and a half hours each way.
Outside town the heathered slopes of Brandon Hill, Kilkenny's highest point, towers above the town and attracts many hardy walkers to pause at Freney's Well before striking on for the summit, and the views to distant mountains and the southern coast at Wexford.
There are more bracing walks over Brandon Hill to Insitioge, along the South Leinster way, or one can spend several days exploring the ridge along the Blackstairs Mountains.
Waterside can provide all the support you need in terms of comfy accommodation, meals, packed lunches, map guides, contacts for local taxis and minibus transport, and some expert local advice from your hosts who have covered every inch of the trails in this area.
