Having spotted the following review of Waterside on the Rick Steves guidebook graffitti wall we decided to share it with you all. It represents the message we are trying to get out to the world about Waterside and Graiguenamanagh; "My husband and I stayed at Waterside. it was such a wonderful place to stay. Graigue is such a great village if you are looking for a small town with tons to see and do.Brian was extremely hospitable and very knowledgeable about the area. John Penfold exhibition

Waterside is pleased to have artist John Penfold back exhibiting in the restaurant. John's work has come on leaps and bounds over the past couple of years and the current exhibition is definitely his best work yet. The collection is a themed one, with all paintings featuring some aspect of the River Barrow. John has this time worked with acrylic on canvas and the results are good. Drop in any day and see for yourself.

Graig Library celebrates!

Graiguenamanagh Library will celebrate its 20th birthday on Thursday 1st May. Widely regarded as one of the best small town libraries in the country, the library has been at the heart of activities in the town for twenty years and is used for many community purposes far beyond the remit of your average library. It is a wonderful venue. The programme for next Thursday is as follows; 3pm Official Launch by Cllr. Tom Maher, Cathaoirleach kilkenny County Council, and unveling of new mural. 4-6pm Children's activities with interactive show provided by entertainer Konor Halpin. 6-7pm Traditional music with Comhaltas Graiguenamanagh 7.30pm Author and TV celebrity Mary Kennedy talks about her life and books. There will also be an exhibition of paintings by local artists, and photos and events from the last 20 years in Graigue. KCLR Radio, as well as newspapers Kilkenny People and Kilkenny Voice will be in attendance on the day. All events on the day are FREE.
 

Bluebell Season

Anybody who has visited Graiguenamanagh in the past will know that April/May is Bluebell season in the woodlands surrounding Graiguenamanagh. This is a great time to walk in this area as we have so many beautiful woodland areas. The handiest of all is Silaire wood, right on the edge of town and running along the river bank. It is a lovely mix of evergreen and deciduous native woodland, and it is an ideal environment for the gorgeous bluebells. Just look at the photo attached. Congratulations to Chris & Marcella Jackson on the recent opening of their piano Gallery in St. Mullins. This really is an impressive development in a rural part of county Carlow. They have built a brand new two-story piano showroom with the South-Easts largest collection of new and second hand pianos. Expect to see upright and grand pianos at every price level right up to the amazing Schimmel pianos at the real top end. Chris jackson offers a full service to all customers from piano purchase, to tunibg, restoration, moving and hiring. marcella runs the showroom and she will very soon be making the space available as a gallery for the visual arts also, so expect to see some fabulous paintings there if you visit. The restaurant will be open for breakfast for guests and other visitors to Graiguenamanagh the whole weekend from 8.30am to 10.00am each morning. We will be serving lunch Sunday the 16th and Monday 17th March 12.30pm to 3.00pm. Dinner will be available Friday 14th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th March from 6.30pm each evening. Library to celebrate 20 years!

Graiguenamanagh Library, regarded as one of the best libraries available in a small town in the southeast, will celebrate 20 years of opening on Thursday May 1st, 2008. Majella and her team at the library are currently putting together a programme of activities for the day that should include the unveiling of a new children's wall mural, guest appearance by television personality Mary kennedy to discuss her book, and other items to be finalised. It is hoped that the other booktown people in the area will add other items to make this a full weekend for all Graigue booktown enthusiasts. Further details as they are announced.
 

Three great family visitor attractions

Here are three great attractions within 15 minutes drive of Waterside. all of these have been visited by Brian & Brigid Roberts and all were excellent entertainment, especially for families. Check out the Dunbrody Emigrant ship at www.denbrody.com, the reptile village, a great cillection of snakes, chameleons, lizards and caimans at www.reptilevillage.net, and great quad motorbikes at www.countryquads.net. These attraction represent some of the best family entertainment in the carlow Kilkenny area and should be a big hit with visitors looking for tourism information for the area.
 

Graiguenamanagh historical Society Lecture

On Friday 14th March Graiguenamanagh historical society will have a lecture in the library, Graiguenamanagh, with guest speaker John Joyce, local Artist, author and historian. The subject will be 'The Album of Sketches by Mary Burtchaell of Brandondale House'. This album is a valuable piece of heritage for Graiguenamanagh and was recently purchased in Canada and returned to Graigue. Why not enjoy an early evening dinner at Waterside and then retire to the library to enjoy this lecture at 8pm.

The dates for the 2008 Graiguenamanagh 'Town of Books' Festival has now been set. the event will take place the weekend of 26-28 September. the organising committee have in fact already had their first meeting re next years festival and are determined to make it the biggest festival yet with some excellent ideas to add to the programme. Any writers out there planning on publishing books in 2008 should contact us now if you would be interested in having your book launched at next years festival.

Continuing our series of art exhibitions at waterside we are pleased to welcome John Cullen for the month of November.john is living in Clonroche, Co. Wexford and has a degree in Fine Arts from NCAD in Dublin. John has been constantly exhibiting his work since graduation in 1986. The current collection at waterside is titled 'Along the Edge'and is a series of paintings from the area know as Raven Point outside Wexford town. This quiet area is at the southern end of a long beach where land meets sea. The combined action of sea and wind are etched on the landscape and seasonal variations bring about many changes in light and colour. A very interesting collection. Drop in and see for yourself.
